Ad request data usage

There are three stages of communication between a venue and Vistar's ad server:

  • The ad request from the venue is the first stage of communication. This is where the venue sends Vistar information about the ad they want to play.

  • The ad response from Vistar is the second stage of communication. This is where Vistar sends the venue information about the ad they want to play.

  • The proof of play from the venue is the third stage of communication. This is where the venue sends Vistar information about the ad they have played, including the date, time, and location of the ad.

On average, those messages are the following sizes:

  • Request:
    • 900 B
  • Response:
    • 1.25 KB if there is an ad to play
    • 300 B if there is no ad to play, almost entirely headers
  • Proof of Play:
    • 400 - 800 B, depending on headers

For example, a venue requesting a :15s spot to Vistar in an 8 spot loop, operating 24 hours a day, and receiving an ad to play on every request, would equate to 1.7 - 2 MB per day and 50-60 MB per month.
